Tutorial Introduction

This tutorial with help you learn what makes Twease different and how Twease can help you find what you are looking for, fast.

Twease is a web-based tool to search Medline® abstracts. Twease indexes each word of Medline® and provides features that can transparently expand your search to help find the information you are looking for.

Twease searches are also partially case sensitive. Short terms are case sensitive, while longer terms are not. For instance, TnT is different from TNT (TnT often stands for Troponin T while TNT often stands for trinitrotoluene). For more details on Twease's case sensitivity, see the Case Sensitive Searches tutorial page.

Finally, Twease can automatically discover common abbreviations for search phrases (e.g., "protein kinase C" will discover PKC, PK-C, aPKC, etc.) and rewrite queries to use these abbreviations. This feature is available through the Slider (on the top right) and the Advanced pane.

Pemphigus foliaceus masquerading as postoperative wound infection : report of a case and review of the koebner and related phenomenon … (2005 Mar)
pemphigus foliaceus masquerading as postoperative wound infection : report of a case and review of the koebner and related phenomenon following surgical procedures . background : The koebner phenomenon , also known as the isomorphic response , is the development of preexisting skin disease following trauma to uninvolved skin . various cutaneous disorders have been described to arise at surgical wounds and scars . moreover , dermatologic procedures , such as cold steel and laser surgery , can evoke koebnerization . objective : To describe a case of pemphigus foliaceus arising in postoperative wounds and to present a review of dermatologic disorders triggered by surgical procedures . methods : We report a case of pemphigus foliaceus initially presenting at sites of Mohs micrographic surgery , shave biopsy , and cryotherapy and , subsequently , at a nonsurgical site . We reviewed the english literature in medline from november 1955 to april 2004 for reports of koebner and related phenomenon following surgical procedures . results : To our knowledge , this is the first reported case of pemphigus foliaceus erupting at surgical and cryotherapy wounds . The clinical appearance can mimic wound infection . In addition to inducing preexisting disease , cutaneous procedures can also trigger the onset of new disease , which can either be limited only to the surgical site or subsequently become generalized . conclusion : postoperative koebner or related responses should be included in the differential diagnosis of poorly healing surgical wounds . Skin biopsies for histopathology …

Pemphigus vegetans occurring in a split thickness skin graft. (2005 Mar)
pemphigus vegetans occurring in a split thickness skin graft . background : pemphigus vegetans , a variant of pemphigus vulgaris , most commonly occurs in the flexural area . objective : To describe an unusual case of pemphigus vegetans occurring in a skin graft recipient site and to discuss the possible etiology . methods : We present a 41 year old man who developed vegetating plaques from the graft recipient site of his left leg for 8 months . results : based on the histopathologic findings of a skin biopsy , this case was diagnosed as pemphigus vegetans . The patient s condition was successfully treated with systemic corticosteroids and acitretin . conclusion : Our case is unique in its presentation of pemphigus vegetans shortly after a split thickness skin graft . physicians should be aware of this entity while differentiating cutaneous lesions arising from a skin graft .

Pemphigus vegetans of hallopeau : immunofluorescent studies. (1977 Sep)
pemphigus vegetans of hallopeau : immunofluorescent studies . immunofluorescent techniques were used in the study of tissue from a patient with pemphigus vegetans of hallopeau . The findings were typical of pemphigus , confirming the propriety of classifying this entity as a benign variant of pemphigus , rather than a disease of purely microbial etiology . The question is raised whether other types of vegetating pyodermas actually are separate diseases or represent a spectrum of pemphigus with the clinical appearance dependent on the patient s immunity to his disease . immunofluorescent studies are proposed as a basis for classification .

Reproduction of the characteristic morphologic changes of familial benign chronic pemphigus in cultures of lesional keratinocytes onto dead deepidermized dermis. (1989 Dec)
reproduction of the characteristic morphologic changes of familial benign chronic pemphigus in cultures of lesional keratinocytes onto dead deepidermized dermis . We report the in vitro reproduction of the classic histologic and ultrastructural features of familial benign chronic pemphigus ( FBCP ) by seeding suspensions of lesional keratinocytes onto healthy heterologous dead deepidermized dermis ( DED ) . With the use of normal keratinocytes , control cultures showed a well differentiated epidermis , with keratohyaline granules and lamellar bodies . To the best of our knowledge this is the first successful culture of FBCP with the use of dispersed lesional keratinocytes . The results suggest that in FBCP the epidermis is the site of the defect leading to acantholysis , without any dermal contribution .

Coexistence of pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid in the upper aerodigestive tract. (2006 May)
coexistence of pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid in the upper aerodigestive tract . pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid are autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin and the mucosa characterized by circulating autoantibodies . coexistence of these lesions is extremely uncommon . We report herein a case of both pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid which occurred in the upper aerodigestive tract . The diagnosis was made based on the circulating autoantibodies and direct immunofluorescent studies . The literature on this subject is reviewed .

Pemphigus vulgaris in siblings : HLA DR4 and HLA DQw3 and susceptibility to pemphigus. (1992 Dec)
pemphigus vulgaris in siblings : HLA DR4 and HLA DQw3 and susceptibility to pemphigus . background : The association of pemphigus vulgaris with the HLA serotypes , DR4 and DRw6 , and with the DQ beta chain alleles , DQw1 and DQw3 , suggests that there is a genetic predisposition to this disease . however , familial cases of pemphigus vulgaris are exceedingly rare . objective : We studied two siblings with pemphigus vulgaris and three unaffected family members to determine whether an HLA allele was associated with the development of pemphigus vulgaris in this family . methods : We utilized restriction fragment length polymorphism methods using the HLA DR beta 1 , HLA DQ alpha , and HLA DW beta 1 genes as cDNA probes . results : We found that the affected siblings share the haplotype HLA DR4 and the DQw . 3 . 2 allele . conclusion : Our findings of gene sharing among siblings with pemphigus vulgaris lend support to previous studies of unrelated caucasian patients , which implicated DQw3 allele polymorphisms in conferring susceptibility to pemphigus .
