Tutorial Introduction

This tutorial with help you learn what makes Twease different and how Twease can help you find what you are looking for, fast.

Twease is a web-based tool to search Medline® abstracts. Twease indexes each word of Medline® and provides features that can transparently expand your search to help find the information you are looking for.

Twease searches are also partially case sensitive. Short terms are case sensitive, while longer terms are not. For instance, TnT is different from TNT (TnT often stands for Troponin T while TNT often stands for trinitrotoluene). For more details on Twease's case sensitivity, see the Case Sensitive Searches tutorial page.

Finally, Twease can automatically discover common abbreviations for search phrases (e.g., "protein kinase C" will discover PKC, PK-C, aPKC, etc.) and rewrite queries to use these abbreviations. This feature is available through the Slider (on the top right) and the Advanced pane.

Endemic pemphigus foliaceus ( fogo selvagem ). (1989 Jun)
endemic pemphigus foliaceus ( fogo selvagem ) . I . clinical features and immunopathology . endemic pemphigus foliaceus is an autoimmune disease that has remarkable features . endemic foci are found in characteristic environments within the interior of brazil . The epidemiologic data strongly suggest that an environmental factor initiates the autoantibody response in the host . As such it is an important disease for in depth study . A group of interested investigators in both brazil and the united states has been formed to attempt to do just that . As part of the overall effort , this cooperative research group for the study of Fogo selvagem presents a definition of the disease , a proposed clinical classification for various forms of the disease , and an outline of what is currently known of its immunopathologic characteristics .

brazilian pemphigus foliaceus ( fogo selvagem ) Most of the clinical , histological and immunohistological features of fogo selvagem resemble those of idiopathic pemphigus foliaceus ( PF ) . Both diseases are clinically characterized by small flaccid bullae evolving into to scaly and crusted lesions , sometimes with pustules , mainly in seborrheic areas of the skin . mucosal surfaces are mostly spared . The main histologic feature of endemic pemphigus foliaceus is a subcorneal acantholytic blister . standard immunofluorescence studies demonstrate intercellular IgG deposits throughout the entire epidermis . these IgG antibodies are mainly of the IgG4 subclass . almost all patients have circulating IgG autoantibodies in their serum directed against stratified epithelial desmosomes . The fogo selvagem autoantibodies and the PF antibodies are directed against the 160 kD desmosomal glycoprotein desmoglein 1 which together with plakoglobin ( 85 kD ) forms a complex of adhesion proteins with desmosomes of stratified epithelia . Fogo selvagem occurs in endemic foci in some areas of brazil and possibly in neighbouring south american countries , very often in children , adolescents and young adults . The etiology of fogo selvagem is still unknown . The frequent association with insect bites has lead to the concept of fogo selvagem being a transmissible disease with acquired immunity in adulthood . however , the infectious agent and possible vectors have not yet been identified .

Nonendemic pemphigus foliaceus presenting as fatal bullous exfoliative erythroderma. (2001 Mar)
nonendemic pemphigus foliaceus presenting as fatal bullous exfoliative erythroderma . pemphigus foliaceus is a cutaneous autoimmune blistering disease that is characterized by lower morbidity and mortality than those observed in pemphigus vulgaris or paraneoplastic pemphigus . however , erythrodermic forms of the endemic variant of pemphigus foliaceus have been associated with a higher mortality . We report a case of nonendemic pemphigus foliaceus that presented as fatal bullous exfoliative erythroderma , and thus , we will emphasize the inclusion of this entity in the differential diagnosis and the use of skin direct immunofluorescence in the evaluation of patients with erythroderma .

The men behind the eponym : francis E. (2003 Sep)
The men behind the eponym : francis E . senear , barney usher , and the senear usher syndrome . This historical review will summarize the report of francis senear and barney usher on a disease that they called pemphigus erythematodes and which later became pemphigus erythematosus ( the senear usher syndrome ) . It will then outline the lives of these two men . finally , it will review the literature on that condition and relate the views of various authorities as to whether pemphigus erythematosus is merely pemphigus foliaceus , a variant of pemphigus foliaceus , a syndrome combining features of lupus erythematosus and pemphigus or whether pemphigus erythematosus ( senear usher syndrome ) is a distinct and separate disease .

Endemic pemphigus foliaceus. (1993 Oct)
endemic pemphigus foliaceus . Fogo selvagem . Fogo selvagem is a form of pemphigus foliaceus indistinguishable on clinical , histologic , immunofluorescence , and ultrastructural grounds from sporadic pemphigus foliaceus found in north america and europe . It can , however , be distinguished on epidemiologic grounds by its unique geographic distribution . The association of FS with its environment is supported by its limited areas of predilection , that is , between 500 and 800 meters altitude near rivers , and the remission of the disease when patients are removed from this environment . owing to its obvious environmental trigger , FS may serve as a model for the initiation of autoimmune phenomena . We need merely to find the specific trigger or triggers , and the search is now under way .

Pemphigus foliaceus with prominent neutrophilic pustules. (2001 Jul)
pemphigus foliaceus with prominent neutrophilic pustules . We describe four patients with generalized scaly and pustular skin lesions showing extensive neutrophilic infiltration in the subcorneal region of the epidermis . immunofluorescence , immunoblot and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay analyses detected IgG antibodies reacting exclusively with desmoglein 1 , the pemphigus foliaceus antigen . This study indicates that pemphigus foliaceus may show prominent neutrophilic pustular skin lesions .

Characterization of autoantibodies in pemphigus using antigen specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assays with baculovirus expressed recombinant desmogleins. (1997 Aug)
characterization of autoantibodies in pemphigus using antigen specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assays with baculovirus expressed recombinant desmogleins . pemphigus vulgaris ( PV ) and pemphigus foliaceus ( PF ) are autoimmune skin diseases caused by autoantibodies against desmoglein ( Dsg ) 3 and Dsg1 , respectively . routine immunofluorescence testing of skin and serum from patients cannot distinguish between these two severe diseases since both have IgG Abs directed against keratinocyte cell surfaces . In this study , recombinant Dsg3 and Dsg1 , produced as secreted proteins by baculovirus expression , have been utilized to develop elisas for the specific characterization of their autoantibodies . Of 49 PV sera , 46 were positive in the Dsg3 elisa and 44 of 46 PF sera were positive in the Dsg1 elisa , compared with only 3 of 23 sera of bullous pemphigoid , and none of 53 normal control sera in both elisas . Both the Dsg3 and Dsg1 elisas were more specific and sensitive than conventional immunofluorescence staining . these Ag specific elisas revealed that more than one half of PV sera ( 26 of 49 ) had anti Dsg1 Abs in addition to anti Dsg3 Abs . PV patients who had not only oral mucous lesions but also significant skin involvement tended to have higher titers of anti Dsg1 Abs . furthermore , the elisa reactivity correlated well with clinical disease activity in 5 of 6 PV and 5 of 5 PF patients . This elisa provides a sensitive and

A review of autoimmune skin diseases in domestic animals : I superficial pemphigus. (2006 Sep)
A review of autoimmune skin diseases in domestic animals : I superficial pemphigus . In humans , the pemphigus denomination encompasses a group of autoimmune blistering skin diseases with intraepidermal separation resulting from cell cell detachment by acantholysis . entities are classified based on the level of blistering in the epidermis , and both superficial ( pemphigus foliaceus , IgA pemphigus ) and deep ( pemphigus vulgaris , pemphigus vegetans and paraneoplastic pemphigus ) variants are recognized . In domestic animals , subsets of pemphigus have been recognized since the mid 1970s , and the disease classification resembles that used for human patients . This article reviews up to date knowledge on the epidemiology , clinical signs , histopathology , immunopathology and treatment outcome of superficial pemphigus in domestic animals . detailed information on canine , feline , equine and caprine pemphigus foliaceus , canine and feline pemphigus erythematosus and canine panepidermal pustular pemphigus is provided .

Complement fixation by brazilian pemphigus foliaceus autoantibodies. (1988 Aug)
complement fixation by brazilian pemphigus foliaceus autoantibodies . This study was undertaken to determine if brazilian pemphigus foliaceus ( BPF ) autoantibodies will fix complement as do P . vulgaris ( PV ) autoantibodies . When sections of human skin were examined following indirect immunofluorescence ( IF ) staining , BPF autoantibodies reacted with the upper layers of epidermis , while PV autoantibodies were reactive with the lower layers . When tissue culture epidermal cells were used for indirect IF , BPF autoantibodies were not detected after plating until 24 h , while PV autoantibodies reacted within 18 h of plating . using complement IF staining methods , BPF autoantibodies were found to fix C1q , C4 and C3 to whole skin sections in an intercellular pattern and to the surface of cultured keratinocytes . although reactive with different epidermal cell surface antigens , autoantibodies in BPF will fix complement in a fashion similar to autoantibodies in PV .
