Tutorial Introduction

This tutorial with help you learn what makes Twease different and how Twease can help you find what you are looking for, fast.

Twease is a web-based tool to search Medline® abstracts. Twease indexes each word of Medline® and provides features that can transparently expand your search to help find the information you are looking for.

Twease searches are also partially case sensitive. Short terms are case sensitive, while longer terms are not. For instance, TnT is different from TNT (TnT often stands for Troponin T while TNT often stands for trinitrotoluene). For more details on Twease's case sensitivity, see the Case Sensitive Searches tutorial page.

Finally, Twease can automatically discover common abbreviations for search phrases (e.g., "protein kinase C" will discover PKC, PK-C, aPKC, etc.) and rewrite queries to use these abbreviations. This feature is available through the Slider (on the top right) and the Advanced pane.

paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes In some instances , tumors can produce signs and symptoms at a distance from the tumor or its metastases . these are defined as paraneoplastic syndrome or humoral syndrome associated with neoplasms . paraneoplastic syndromes can arise from circulating substances secreted by tumors . The most well recognized and frequent concomitant of neoplasms is the production of hormones by nonendocrine tumors . these are usually called ectopic hormone producing tumors and bring about clinically endocrinologic manifestations secondary to hormone excess in patients with nonendocrine tumors . paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes frequently observed are cushing s syndrome due to ectopic production of ACTH , siadh due to ectopic production of ADH , hyper calcemia , hypoglycemia and so on . In order to establish a paraneoplastic etiology for alteration in hormone production , evidence that the hormone is produced by the tumor must be proved . paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes should be distinguished from hormone production by benign cells , hormone production by a malignancy of an endocrine organ or alterations in hormone production being due to infiltration into the endocrine organ by a primary tumor . The treatment of ectopic endocrine syndromes should be directed primarily at the tumor . because the course of this type of syndrome usually runs parallel to the course of the underlying tumor , the ectopically produced hormone can be a useful monitoring marker of the disease .

Paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes : a review. (2004 Jan)
paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes : a review . The paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes ( ectopic or inappropriate hormone production ) comprise a wide array of symptom complexes associated with malignant or less commonly benign neoplasms . Most of the syndromes are associated with the production of peptide hormones , which , in some instances , have autocrine stimulatory effects . hypercalcemia , the most common paraneoplastic endocrine syndrome , may be due to the systemic release of parathyroid hormone related protein ( pthrp ) , factors that may be produced locally ( cytokines ) , or by a combination of these mechanisms . A spectrum of other syndromes may be related to the production of specific hormones or growth factors , including insulin like growth factor and fibroblast growth factor 23 . molecular mechanisms responsible for the development of these syndromes are poorly understood . mutational events not only may initiate neoplastic transformation but may also lead to the activation ( re expression ) of genes responsible for hormone production . additionally , epigenetic events such as methylation may also be responsible for the development of these syndromes . It is likely that a multiplicity of genetic and epigenetic events may contribute to the development of paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes .
